# How to set up a custom domain

Add a subdomain you own to your workspace, set its DNS records and check that it shows as Active.

A custom domain lets the file transfer and file request pages you share open at an address you own, such as `files.example.com`. The same domain also serves branded recipient email. This article shows how to add the domain to a workspace, set its DNS records and check that it is active. You need access to the DNS settings of the domain at your DNS provider. Custom domains are available on every plan, and Free includes one. Compare the plans on the [pricing page](/pricing).

## Add the domain

1. Open the [Domains](/dashboard/settings/domains) tab of the workspace that will use the domain. Domains are set per workspace, so repeat these steps in each workspace that needs one.
2. Select **Add domain**. The button is shown to the workspace owner and to team members whose role can change settings.
3. In the **Add a domain** dialog, select **Workspace domain**, then select **Continue**.
4. In the **Domain** field, enter the subdomain, such as `files.example.com`, then select **Create**.

Note: a root domain such as `example.com` is refused, and so is any domain that contains `www`. Pasting `https://` in front of the domain is fine, because Tarkle removes it. Tarkle also refuses a domain that another workspace, a Brand Page or an event page already uses.

## Set the DNS records

After you select **Create**, the dialog title changes to **Verifying** and your domain name. The dialog shows the **Status** and a table with **Type**, **Name** and **Value** columns. Add each record at your DNS provider exactly as it appears in that table.

## Check the status

1. Select **Refresh / check** to check the domain again. When Tarkle confirms the domain is active, the dialog closes and Tarkle shows the message "Custom domain verified and connected."
2. Later, open the **Domains** tab again, select the domain's row, then select **Refresh**.

Each domain row shows **Active** once the domain is connected. Until then it shows **Pending** or **Action required**.

## Edit or delete a domain

Open the menu on the domain's row to choose **Edit** or **Delete**.

To change the domain, choose **Edit**, enter the new domain in the **Domain** field of the **Edit custom domain** dialog, and select **Save**. Tarkle removes the existing domain and adds the new one, so ownership and DNS verification run again. Existing public links that use the old domain may stop working.

To remove a domain, choose **Delete**, type the domain in the **Custom domain** field and select **Delete**. The **Delete** button stays off until the typed name matches the domain. Both public delivery and branded recipient email for this domain are removed and no longer accessible.

A workspace has one custom domain. Tarkle refuses a second domain while one is set up, so delete the existing domain before you add another. Once it is deleted, you can add the new domain.

## Other domain types

Brand Page domains and event page domains are added in the same **Add a domain** dialog, as their own destinations, and each has its own limit. For a Brand Page, see [How do I use my own domain for a brand page?](/help/branding/use-your-own-domain). On the Agency plan, your organization can also use one organization domain for clients. See [How do I use my own domain with the Agency plan?](/help/agency-plan/agency-organization-domain).

## What happens next

Once the domain shows **Active**, the file transfer and file request pages you share open at that address.
