# How to create a file transfer

Add files, a folder or library items, then set the title, access choices and link for a file transfer.

A file transfer is the link you send so someone can open the files you chose. You create one in three steps: choose your content, add a title and summary, then set the access choices and create the transfer.

## Step 1: Choose your content

1. Open [Transfers](/dashboard/transfers) in your workspace and start a new transfer.
2. Make sure **Files** is selected. It is the first of the three transfer type tiles.
3. Pick the tab that matches your content: **Upload**, **Folders** or **Library**.
4. Click **Continue** when your content is ready.

On **Upload**, drop files from your computer or click browse. Each file uploads and shows its own progress bar. On **Folders**, drop a folder or click browse. Each file inside the folder is uploaded and listed on its own. On **Library**, use the search field to find files that are already in your workspace, and select one or more.

**Continue** stays unavailable until every file has finished uploading.

The total size of a transfer must stay within your organization's plan limit. Free allows 1 GB per transfer and up to 15 transfers a month. Pro and Agency allow up to 200 GB per transfer and have no monthly transfer limit. See [plans and pricing](/pricing) for what each plan includes.

If your organization has no storage left, uploads show this message: "You're out of storage. Delete files or upgrade to Pro to keep uploading."

## Step 2: Add a title and summary

1. Type a **Title**. It is required, and Tarkle does not move on until you add one.
2. Optionally type a **Summary**. It can hold up to 150 characters, and a counter shows how many you have used.
3. Click **Continue**.

If the AI assistant is turned on for your organization, a wand icon appears next to **Title**. Click it to generate a title and summary. The AI assistant is part of Pro and Agency.

## Step 3: Set access and create the transfer

Step 3 lists these choices. Tick the ones you need.

- **Direct link**: the file downloads as soon as the link is opened, with no transfer page. See [direct download links](https://tarkle.com/help/file-sharing/direct-download-links-in-tarkle).
- **Gated**: the recipient submits their details before they can open the transfer.
- **Password protected**: type the password in the field that appears under the choice.
- **Burn after read**: the first download uses up the transfer, and later attempts are refused. See [burn after read](https://tarkle.com/help/access-control/burn-after-read-file-transfers-with-tarkle).
- **View only**: recipients can view the files but cannot download them. See [View only file sharing](https://tarkle.com/help/access-control/view-only-file-sharing-share-files-without-allowing-download).
- **Expiration date**: tick the box and pick a date in the calendar. The earliest date is tomorrow and the latest is 3 years from today. See [file transfer expiration dates](https://tarkle.com/help/access-control/file-transfer-expiration-dates-in-tarkle).

Choices that cannot be used with the ones you picked are greyed out.

If paid transfers are turned on, a **Charge for Download** choice also appears. A paid transfer cannot use password protection, burn after read, view only or an expiration date. See [How to charge for access to a transfer](https://tarkle.com/help/selling-files/charge-for-access-create-paid-transfers).

Click **Create transfer**.

## What happens next

After you click **Create transfer**, a success screen shows the link with a **Copy** button. To send the link by email, type addresses under **Share by email** and send them from that screen. Tarkle emails each address separately, and each address that is not yet a contact becomes one.
