# How to connect an AI assistant to Tarkle

Create an access token for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or another assistant so it can upload files and create links.

You can connect an AI assistant such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor to Tarkle. Once connected, the assistant can upload files, create share links and create file requests in your account, when you ask it to. The feature is in beta. Tarkle releases it to all accounts at once, so until it is released, the Claude & Codex page is not found.

## What the assistant can and cannot do

The assistant works with the workspaces where you can upload and share files, and each action follows your role in that workspace. If your role there does not allow uploading or sharing files, the assistant gets an error instead. Your plan's per-file size and storage limits apply to uploads too. You can see what each plan includes on [pricing](/pricing).

The assistant can list your workspaces, browse the files in a workspace and search them by name. It can upload a file it can read to a workspace you choose. When it cannot read a file, such as a chat attachment, it can give you a browser upload link instead, and you pick the file yourself on the page that opens.

The assistant can create a public share link for up to 25 files, as files, audio or video. Anyone with the link can view and download the files, and the assistant cannot add a password or an expiry date to that link. To add them, open the transfer in the Tarkle app, as described in [How to password protect and set an expiry on a file transfer](/help/getting-started/password-protect-expire-and-pause-a-transfer).

The assistant can create a [file request](/help/file-requests/what-are-file-requests-in-tarkle) with a public link and an optional expiry date. Anyone with that link can upload files into the destination folder. The assistant can also list your file requests as active, completed or all, and list the files submitted to one of them. It can list the brands in a workspace, with each brand's own brand-page domain if it has one.

Tarkle sends no email when the assistant creates a share link or a file request, so give the link to the person yourself. The assistant cannot delete, rename or move files. It cannot read or change billing or settings, and it cannot send email.

An assistant can make up to 120 calls per user in each 60-second window. Past that limit, Tarkle refuses the call as rate limited and asks the assistant to retry after 60 seconds.

## How to connect

Start with an access token from the Claude & Codex page, then give your assistant the setup prompt from the same page.

1. **Open the page.** Open [Claude & Codex](/dashboard/connect-ai) in the Tarkle app. The first card is headed **Use Tarkle inside your AI**.
2. **Name your token.** Under **Access tokens**, type a **Name** of up to 80 characters, for example "Cursor on my laptop".
3. **Choose the expiry.** Open **Expires** and pick 30 days, 90 days or 1 year. It is set to 90 days by default.
4. **Create the token.** Click **Create token**. The button stays off until you type a name.
5. **Copy the token.** Click **Copy** next to the token, then click **Done**.
6. **Copy the setup prompt.** In the **Use Tarkle inside your AI** card, click **Copy**.
7. **Paste the prompt.** Paste it into your assistant. The prompt asks the assistant to read the install guide at https://tarkle.com/install.md and follow it.
8. **Give the assistant your token.** Paste the token when the assistant asks for it. For Codex, first set an environment variable named TARKLE_MCP_TOKEN to your token, as the Codex setup guide shows.
9. **Test the connection.** Ask your assistant: "List my Tarkle workspaces." A list of workspaces means the connection works.

Note: The token is shown only once. Copy it before you click **Done**. If you lose it, create a new token.

The setup guide covers Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, VS Code (GitHub Copilot) and Windsurf. Any other client that supports remote MCP servers with custom headers can connect too. For those, use the server address https://mcp.tarkle.com/mcp and add the header Authorization with the value Bearer, a space, then your token. Tarkle is still verifying each client end to end. If a test fails, see [How to contact Tarkle](/help/about-tarkle/how-to-contact-tarkle).

## Manage your tokens

Each active token appears in the **Access tokens** list on the Claude & Codex page, and in the **MCP** tab of Developers. The list shows the token's name, its last four characters, its expiry date and the day it was last used. A token that has not been used shows **Never**.

Expired tokens stay in the list until you revoke them. To stop a token at once, click **Revoke** next to it. Tarkle does not ask you to confirm, and the assistant is refused the next time it uses that token.

You can have up to 10 active tokens. Revoked and expired tokens do not count toward the 10. A token stops working when it expires, so create a new token to keep the assistant connected. Tarkle checks your second sign-in step before it creates a token, and if that check blocks you, creating a token fails with Not authorized.

A token acts as you, so treat it like a password. Claude (web and desktop) and ChatGPT custom connectors only connect with browser sign-in, which Tarkle does not support for them. Use a token with Claude Code, Codex, Cursor or another client that can send an Authorization header.

## What happens next

If the assistant reports an unauthorized error, the token is wrong, expired or revoked, and the error does not say which. Create a new token on the Claude & Codex page and give it to the assistant. If the assistant reports a 404 error, the Tarkle feature is not available right now. To send a file the assistant uploaded, see [How to share business files with Tarkle](/help/file-sharing/how-to-share-business-files-with-tarkle).
