# How to connect an AI assistant to Tarkle

Create an access token for Claude Code, Codex, Cursor, or another assistant so it can upload files and create links.

You can connect an AI assistant such as Claude Code, Codex or Cursor to Tarkle. Once connected, the assistant can upload files, create share links and create file requests in your account, when you ask it to. The connection uses an access token that you create in Tarkle and give to the assistant. The feature is in beta. Until Tarkle releases it to all accounts, only Tarkle staff can open the Claude & Codex page.

## What the assistant can and cannot do

The assistant works with the workspaces where you can upload and share files. Each action follows your role in that workspace, and if your role does not allow it, the assistant gets an error instead. Your plan's limits apply to uploads too. Free supports uploads and transfers up to 1 GB each, and Pro and Agency support files up to 200 GB. See [pricing](/pricing) for what each plan includes.

The assistant can list your workspaces, the files in a workspace, your file requests and the files submitted to them. It can upload a file to a workspace you choose, create a public share link for files, and create a [file request](/help/file-requests/what-are-file-requests-in-tarkle) with a public link. Anyone with a share link can download the files without a Tarkle account, and anyone with a file request link can send files to it.

The assistant can use only the actions listed in this article. To add a password or an expiry date to a transfer, open it in the Tarkle app, as described in [How to password protect and set an expiry on a file transfer](/help/getting-started/password-protect-expire-and-pause-a-transfer).

Reading calls are limited to 120 per user in each minute. Calls that start an upload, sign upload parts, or create a share link or a file request are limited to 30 per user in each minute. Past a limit, Tarkle refuses the call and sends a Retry-After header that says how long to wait.

## How to connect

1. **Open the page.** Open [Claude & Codex](/dashboard/connect-ai) in the Tarkle app. The first card is headed **Use Tarkle inside your AI**.
2. **Name your token.** Under **Access tokens**, type a **Name** of up to 80 characters, for example "Cursor on my laptop".
3. **Choose the expiry.** Open **Expires** and pick 30 days, 90 days or 1 year. It is set to 90 days by default.
4. **Create the token.** Click **Create token**. The button stays off until you type a name.
5. **Copy the token.** Copy it now, because the page says it will not be shown again. Then click **Done**.
6. **Copy the setup prompt.** In the **Use Tarkle inside your AI** card, copy the setup prompt.
7. **Paste the prompt.** Paste the prompt into your assistant, then paste the token where the assistant asks for it.
8. **Test the connection.** Ask your assistant to list your Tarkle workspaces.

A token made on this page can do everything its three access choices allow, described below. To give a token fewer abilities, create it on [Settings > API](/dashboard/settings/api) instead.

## Choose what a token may do

On [Settings > API](/dashboard/settings/api), click **New token** and choose the option for an MCP token. Under **What this token may do**, tick only the access it needs:

- **Read**: list workspaces, files, file requests, submissions and brands
- **Upload**: start uploads and send files into a workspace
- **Share**: create public share links and file requests

**Create token** stays off until at least one box is ticked. The assistant can use only the actions that the ticked access allows, so a token with only Read can list files but cannot upload or share.

## Manage your tokens

Each active token appears in the **Access tokens** list on the Claude & Codex page, and on [Settings > API](/dashboard/settings/api), where developer tokens and MCP tokens are listed together. The list shows the token's name, its last four characters, its expiry date and the day it was last used. A token that has not been used shows Never.

Expired tokens stay in the list until you revoke them. To remove a token, click **Revoke** next to it. Tarkle does not ask you to confirm. A revoked token no longer appears in the list.

You can have up to 10 active tokens. Revoked and expired tokens do not count toward the 10, so create a new token when you need one and the limit is reached. A token acts as you, limited to your roles in each workspace, so treat it like a password.

## What happens next

If you lose a token, create a new one on the Claude & Codex page and give it to the assistant. To send a file the assistant uploaded, see [How to share business files with Tarkle](/help/file-sharing/how-to-share-business-files-with-tarkle).
