# Share files and get paid with Stripe

Connect your own Stripe account to Tarkle to charge for access to your file transfers, then turn on paid transfers.

Connect your own Stripe account to Tarkle to charge for access to a file transfer. When a recipient pays, the payment is made through your Stripe account and the files open for them. This article shows how to connect Stripe, add the webhook it needs, and turn on paid transfers.

## What you need

- A Stripe account that takes live payments. Tarkle accepts live keys only.
- Three values from Stripe: a publishable key, a secret key or a restricted key, and a webhook signing secret.
- The owner of the workspace. Only the owner sees the Stripe card in Integrations.
- A Pro or Agency plan to charge for access. Connecting Stripe is open on every plan. See [Tarkle plans and pricing](/help/billing-subscription/tarkle-plans-and-pricing) for what each plan includes.

## 1. Get your keys

Copy your live publishable key and your live secret key or restricted key from your Stripe account. A restricted key works as well as a secret key. Tarkle refuses a test key.

Then open [Integrations](/dashboard/settings/integrations) in your workspace settings. Integrations are set per workspace. In the **Payments** section, click **Connect** on the Stripe row. If Stripe is already connected, the row shows a **Connected** badge and a **Manage** button instead.

The window is titled **Add Stripe**. Paste the **Publishable key** and the **Secret key** into it. Tarkle stores them encrypted and never shows them again.

## 2. Add the webhook

Stripe tells Tarkle when a payment succeeds, so Tarkle can unlock the files for the buyer. Keep the Stripe window open while you set this up.

1. Click the copy button next to the webhook address shown in the Stripe window.
2. In your Stripe account, add a webhook pointing to that address.
3. Select the events `payment_intent.succeeded` and `checkout.session.completed`. Tarkle ignores any other event.
4. Copy the signing secret of that webhook.
5. In the Stripe window in Tarkle, paste it into **Webhook signing secret**.

Tarkle checks every message from Stripe against the signing secret you saved, and rejects a message that does not match.

## 3. Save

Click **Save**. Tarkle needs all three values, either typed now or already saved. When it saves, Stripe is switched on for the workspace and the row shows **Connected**.

## Two switches, not one

Connecting Stripe does not by itself offer paid transfers. To charge for a transfer, you also turn on **Enable paid transfers** in **Settings → General → File settings**. The switch is off by default and is saved as soon as you change it. Only the workspace owner can change it.

Paid transfers are a Pro feature, and Agency includes everything in Pro. On the Free plan the switch is locked with a **Pro** badge. Free can connect Stripe, but it cannot charge for transfers.

When both switches are on and Stripe is connected, the Payments page appears in the sidebar and you can charge for access when you create a transfer. If one step is missing, the [troubleshooting article](/help/troubleshooting/why-cant-i-turn-on-paid-transfers) names the step to take.

## What the recipient sees

When someone opens a paid file transfer link, the page shows the transfer name, its summary, the files included and the total price. The files stay hidden until payment. The recipient clicks **Proceed to checkout**, and a **Pay to download** window opens with Stripe's payment form. They click **Complete Payment**. The page then waits while the payment is recorded and opens the files.

## Change or disconnect Stripe

To change a value, open **Manage** on the Stripe row, type the new value in its field and click **Save**. A field you leave empty keeps the value already saved.

To stop charging, open **Manage** and click **Disconnect**. Tarkle switches Stripe off and keeps your saved keys, so you can connect again without entering them again.
