# How to import files from Google Drive or Dropbox

Copy files from Google Drive or Dropbox into your Tarkle library from the Upload menu, with no download first.

You can copy files from Google Drive or Dropbox into your Tarkle library without downloading them first. Tarkle copies each file you pick, and you start the import from the **Upload** menu in your library. Import is included on the Free plan. Your organization's plan sets the largest file you can import: 1 GB per file on Free, and up to 200 GB per file on Pro and Agency. For each plan's limits, see [Tarkle pricing](/pricing).

## Import from Google Drive

1. Open your library at [Files](/dashboard/files) and go to the folder you want the files in. If you are not in a folder, the files go to the top of your library.
2. Click **Upload**, then click **Import from Google Drive**. If Tarkle is already connected to Google Drive, Google's picker opens straight away.
3. If Tarkle is not connected yet, Google asks for access in the same tab. When Google returns you to Tarkle, click **Upload** and **Import from Google Drive** again to open the picker.
4. In Google's picker, tick one or more files.
5. Tarkle copies the files. Each file has its own row in the upload panel while it is copied.

Google's picker does not let you select folders. Google Docs, Sheets, Slides and Drawings are converted to Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PNG files. Google exports are limited to 10 MB, so a larger Google file cannot be converted and is not added. Google Forms and other Google items that are not files cannot be imported. Google Drive files over 100 MiB are copied in parts. Keep this window open until they finish.

From the Upload menu, Tarkle does not show an "Added" message for Google Drive files. Progress shows in the upload panel instead. Files that were already imported into this workspace are skipped, and a notice says how many were skipped. If a file cannot be added, a notice lists its name and the reason.

## Import from Dropbox

1. Open [Files](/dashboard/files) and go to the folder you want the files in.
2. Click **Upload**, then click **Import from Dropbox**. The **Import from Dropbox** window opens.
3. If Dropbox is not connected, click **Connect Dropbox** and allow access on Dropbox. If the connection has expired, click **Reconnect Dropbox**.
4. Find your files. Click a folder to open it, or type in **Search Dropbox...**. Search looks through all of Dropbox and starts after two characters.
5. Select files. Tick the files you want, or click **Select all files** to select every file on screen.
6. Click **Add from Dropbox (N)**, where N is the number of files you selected.

When a file matches one already in your library, the button reads **Review and add (N)** instead. The review says "This file is already in your library." For each file, choose **Replace** or **Upload as new**. **Continue** stays off until each file that needs a choice has one.

- **Replace** adds the Dropbox file as the newest version of the file in your library and keeps the earlier version. Replace needs the Pro plan, because [file versioning](/help/storage/file-versioning-what-it-is-and-how-it-works) is a Pro feature. On Pro, the earlier version is kept for 90 days and counts toward your storage. If the file is in a file transfer, replacing it updates the transfer for recipients. On Free, a file you choose to replace is added as a separate copy, and Tarkle shows a notice that it could not be saved as a new version.
- **Upload as new** adds the Dropbox file as a separate file in your library.

Dropbox files over 100 MiB are copied in parts, the same as Google Drive files. The copy runs from the open page, so if you close it, the import is listed under **Unfinished imports** in the **Import from Dropbox** window. Open the window again and click **Resume** to continue, or **Discard** to remove it. When a Dropbox import finishes, Tarkle shows a message such as "Added 2 files from Dropbox".

## What you can pick

You pick files, not folders. In Dropbox, click a folder to open it, then tick the files inside. Tarkle does not recreate the folder structure from Google Drive or Dropbox: each file goes into the folder you chose in your library. To keep a structure, create the folders in your library first, then import into each one. [File and folder management in Tarkle](/help/storage/file-and-folder-management-in-tarkle) explains how to create and move folders.

Each file is checked before it is copied. A file larger than your plan allows, or one that does not fit in the storage you have left, is not added, and the result shows the reason.

## What happens next

Imported files appear in the folder you were in when you clicked **Upload**, or at the top of your library if you were not in a folder. They count toward your storage like any other file.

## When import is not available

Tarkle does not list **Import from Dropbox** or **Import from Google Drive** in the Upload menu for some accounts. The **Upload** button is unavailable when your storage is full. If Tarkle shows the message "you do not have permission to add files here", the file is not added, so ask someone who manages your workspace to check your access.
