Connect ChatGPT, Claude and Grok

Connect ChatGPT, Claude or Grok to the Tarkle MCP server with browser sign-in, without an API key, and disconnect them again.

ChatGPT, Claude and Grok connect to the Tarkle MCP server through browser sign-in. You add Tarkle as a custom connector, sign in to Tarkle and allow access on the Tarkle consent page. No API key is needed for this. Coding assistants and other apps that send a header use an API key instead, as described in Connect coding assistants.

Before you start

The server address is https://mcp.tarkle.com/mcp. Browser sign-in uses your own Tarkle account, and the assistant acts as you. It reaches the workspaces you belong to and can do what your role in each one allows. A browser connection is not limited to chosen workspaces.

Connect ChatGPT

  1. In ChatGPT, open the connector settings, add a custom connector (an MCP server) and enter https://mcp.tarkle.com/mcp as its address.
  2. Start the sign-in that ChatGPT offers. Tarkle opens in your browser. If you are not signed in to Tarkle, sign in first. Tarkle then returns you to the approval step.
  3. On the Tarkle consent page, check the app name and the email shown after “Signed in as”. Select Allow to approve, or Deny to stop.
  4. Go back to ChatGPT and ask it to list your Tarkle workspaces.

Connect Claude

  1. In Claude, open the connector settings and add a custom connector with the address https://mcp.tarkle.com/mcp.
  2. Sign in to Tarkle when Claude asks. If you are not signed in, Tarkle asks you to sign in first.
  3. On the Tarkle consent page, check the app name and select Allow.
  4. Ask Claude to list your Tarkle workspaces.

Connect Grok

  1. In Grok, open the connector settings, add a custom connector (an MCP server) and enter https://mcp.tarkle.com/mcp as its address.
  2. Sign in to Tarkle when Grok asks. If you are not signed in, sign in first and Tarkle returns you to the approval step.
  3. On the Tarkle consent page, check the app name and select Allow.
  4. Ask Grok to list your Tarkle workspaces.

The consent page names the app and lists what it can do: list your workspaces and files, upload files into a workspace you can share from, and create public share links for those files. It acts as you, limited to what your role in each workspace allows. Links it creates are public.

Tarkle has not verified the app name, because the app chooses it. Check the address the page shows under “You will be sent back to” before you select Allow. Selecting Allow sends you back to the app you connected.

What to expect after you allow access

After you allow access, the assistant has the Tarkle tools for your workspaces. The full list is in the tools reference. Tools that create a public link, invite a person by email or change a member’s role first return a preview that creates nothing. The preview tells the assistant to show it to you and ask whether to go ahead. Only after you agree does the assistant run the action again with the confirmation code from the preview.

Upload size in chat apps

A chat app sends files up to 5 GB through Tarkle. For a larger file, the assistant gives you a Tarkle upload page link, and you pick the file in your browser, where your plan’s per-file limit applies. An assistant that runs on your own computer has no 5 GB cap and uses the plan’s per-file limit. The steps for uploads are on the uploads page.

Disconnect

To disconnect ChatGPT, Claude or Grok, remove the Tarkle connector from the app. The consent page says you can revoke access at any time. This connection does not use an API key, so deleting a key in Settings, API does not change it. The API keys in Settings, API are a separate credential, described below.

API keys in Settings, API

Coding assistants and other apps that send an Authorization header use an API key, made in Settings, API. Only the owner and admins of an organization see that tab. The Create API key dialog asks for a Name and an Access choice: All workspaces or Only selected workspaces. A key can read and change everything in Tarkle for the workspaces it may reach. It works for the API, MCP and rclone.

A key limited to selected workspaces sees only those workspaces through the MCP server, and it cannot create a workspace there. A key that was made before full access existed is marked Legacy and does not work with the MCP server. Create a new key for it instead. The key is shown when you create it. Later, the owner or an admin can copy it again from the key’s menu with Copy token, and deleting the key stops it at once.

If the connection does not work, see Troubleshooting.

Other connector apps

Perplexity has not been tested with Tarkle. Other apps that can send an Authorization header connect with an API key from Settings, API, as described in Connect coding assistants. The setup guide for agents is at https://tarkle.com/install.md.
