Paid video transfer: sell video files with Tarkle

Charge for downloads of a video from a transfer link, with a free preview and a price, paid through Stripe.

Like audio, video paid transfers use the same transfer modal. There is no separate video upload flow. Understanding how the modal handles video files specifically gives you control over preview and download behavior.

Before you start

Paid transfers are a Pro feature, so your organization must be on Pro or Agency. If your organization is on Free, upgrade your organization to Pro first, or compare the plans and pricing.

Two settings in each workspace must be on before the Charge for download option appears. Open Settings, go to the General tab and turn on Enable paid transfers. The switch is locked on the Free plan. Then connect Stripe in Integrations with its publishable key, secret key and webhook signing secret. The Stripe setup guide walks through the connection. Once both are in place, Payments appears in the sidebar.

If a message appears when you try to charge for a transfer, Why can't I turn on paid transfers? names the step to take. For the general setup of any paid transfer, read How to charge for access to a transfer.

Creating a paid video transfer

  1. Open the new transfer modal.

  2. On the Upload tab, drag your video into the drop area. To use a video that is already in your files, click the Library tab and select it.

  3. Click the button at the bottom right to go to step 2.

  4. In step 2, enter a Title. It is required. The Summary holds up to 150 characters.

  5. Click the button at the bottom right to go to step 3, then tick Charge for download.

  6. Enter the Price and choose its currency. The currency starts at your workspace currency when Stripe accepts it, and at USD when it does not. You can change it.

  7. Set the free preview in seconds. It starts at 30 and accepts 5 to 300.

  8. Click the submit button on step 3 to create the transfer.

Charge for download is not offered for a video pasted as a link from YouTube, Vimeo or another provider. Tarkle accepts common video formats, such as MP4, WebM, MOV, AVI and MKV. Every uploaded video is converted to MP4 for playback.

When you tick Charge for download, Allow download and Charge for download cannot be on at the same time. Allow casting, Allow Picture-in-Picture and Allow public embedding are switched off and cannot be turned on for a paid video. Show watermark during playback cannot be used either, because turning the watermark on turns downloads off.

Tarkle refuses a paid transfer that has a password, burn after read, an email check, view only or an expiration date. A paid transfer always uses the standard download, so no direct link is created for it.

What the buyer sees

The buyer opens the transfer link and watches the free preview for the number of seconds you set. To download the video, the buyer pays through a Stripe payment form, and the payment goes to your own Stripe account.
