DocSend alternative for freelancers and small teams

If you are looking for a DocSend alternative, start with what you need to know after you hit send. DocSend is the stronger tool when you need page-by-page analytics, watermarks or a data room across a large sales team. A simpler link-based tool such as Tarkle suits freelancers, and it shows whether a transfer was viewed or downloaded.

This guide shows what to compare, where each tool fits, and how to check any shared link before you trust it.

Who should choose DocSend

DocSend is built around documents that need to be read closely. Its Activity tab highlights page-by-page analytics and details of the visitor, such as their name, location and device, according to DocSend's help page on the Activity tab. To identify your visitor, Require email to view must be enabled on the link. That is the right detail when you are raising money and want to know which slide an investor stopped on.

DocSend also goes further on control. Its link settings include a password and an expiry date, and email verification is on its Advanced and Advanced Data Rooms plans, according to DocSend's link settings page. Watermarks are only available on those same plans, and you can select any combination of the visitor's email address, IP address or account name, as its watermark guide explains.

If you run due diligence or manage a sales team that tracks many prospects, DocSend is the better fit, and a lighter tool will feel thin.

The trade-off is cost and size. The DocSend pricing page lists $10/user/month on Personal and $45/user/month on Standard, as read in November 2026. On Advanced it lists lightweight data rooms (Spaces) with folder and file level security. New DocSend accounts also start on a trial. According to DocSend's trial overview, a new account is automatically subscribed to a 14-day trial of its Advanced Data Rooms plan. If no card is on file when the trial ends, the account moves to a limited trial plan and its links with premium features are turned off.

Who should choose Tarkle as a DocSend alternative

Tarkle is a cloud storage and file-sharing platform for freelancers, agencies, and client-facing businesses. If you send a deck, a proposal or a client PDF and want a branded link, you see whether a transfer was viewed or downloaded, you can lock it with a password, set an expiry date, and disable the link in one click. Recipients do not need an account to download.

Tarkle's Free plan costs nothing and needs no credit card. It includes 5 GB of storage, file sharing and file requests, custom branding, a custom domain and password protection for shared files.

Tarkle plans and pricing page

If your question is how long someone spent on each page, DocSend is the tool built for that.

What to compare before you choose

Put the same short list next to each tool. Most disagreements come from one of these seven points.

  1. Analytics depth. Do you need page-by-page reading time, or only a status that says viewed or downloaded?

  2. Gate before opening. A passcode, an email address, or both?

  3. Expiry. Can the link stop working on a date you set?

  4. Revoke. Can you switch a link off after sending, without asking the recipient to delete anything?

  5. Watermarks. Do you need the viewer's details stamped on the pages?

  6. Data rooms. Do you share many files with permissions, or one document per link?

  7. Cost per seat. What happens to the bill when you add a part-time contractor?

Write down which of these seven you will use in the next three months, not the ones that sound useful. Most small teams find two or three, and that decides the tool.

Feature comparison

  • Know what happened. DocSend shows page-by-page analytics. Tarkle's transfer status shows whether a transfer was viewed or downloaded, with the badges and the Activity section on each transfer. Slack alerts tell you when files are viewed or downloaded. They need Pro.

  • Gate before opening. DocSend offers a link password, "Verify email to view" on its Advanced plans and allow or block lists. Tarkle offers password protection, and email capture asks for an email address before a download starts.

  • Expiry. DocSend lets you set an expiration date on a link. In Tarkle, link expiration sets a date after which a transfer or request link stops working.

  • Revoke. DocSend lists revoking document access. In Tarkle, revoke access disables a link in one click.

  • Limit what people do. View-only transfers let people look at files without offering a download. A one-time link stops working after its first download. It burns on the download, not on the first open, so a visitor who only looks at the page has not used it. Once a download is recorded, the link is refused, so issue a fresh link if someone needs a second go.

  • Watermarks and data rooms. DocSend adds watermarks on its Advanced plans and offers data rooms (Spaces). Tarkle's client portal is a branded place where each client signs in with their email and sees only what you shared with them. If you need a watermark on every page, compare the two before you choose.

  • Your name on the link. Custom branding puts your logo, colours and favicon on every transfer page, request page and portal, and it is on Free. A custom transfer link, like files.yourstudio.com/t/brand-assets, is on Pro.

Pricing and trial

DocSend charges per seat on its lower tiers and starts new accounts on a trial, as described above. Read the DocSend pricing page and its trial overview before you rely on either.

Tarkle has a Free plan with no credit card required. Pro is available monthly at $29 per month or annually at $228 per year, and Agency includes everything in Pro. See every plan on the pricing page.

How to check a shared link before you trust it

Tracked links are useful, and that is also why attackers use them. UCSF IT described a December 2025 lure whose first link was a genuine DocSend link, followed by a chain of redirects to a PDF-themed credential harvesting page. IRONSCALES lists DocSend as a real share used as a clean first hop, with a redirect or a reply-to address diverted further on. The checks below apply to any shared link.

A passing authentication check is not enough. A phishing email can pass SPF, DKIM, and DMARC, so use these steps as well.

  • The sender. Check the reply-to, not just the from. A reply-to on a different, unfamiliar domain is a classic diversion.

  • The domain. Read the address in the browser bar after the page loads, and inspect the domain for lookalikes. If the page bounces through several pages, stop.

  • What it asks for. A request for your email password, a "sign in to view" screen for your work account or an urgent payment or HR notice is a warning.

  • The context. An unexpected signature request, shared file, or form is the strongest signal, even from a real address. Were you expecting this file?

  • Out of band. Confirm out of band for anything high-stakes, by calling a number you already have.

If anything looks off, do not click. Message the sender on a channel you already use, such as a chat app or a phone number you have saved, and ask whether they sent it.

These steps reduce risk. They do not guarantee safety, so report anything suspicious to your IT contact or email provider.

Switching from DocSend to Tarkle

  1. List the documents you share most often, such as proposals, pitch decks and client PDFs.

  2. Upload them to Tarkle and create a transfer for each. Add a password and an expiry date where the file is sensitive.

  3. Set up your branding. Custom transfer links are on Pro.

  4. On Pro or Agency, connect Slack alerts if you want a message when a client views or downloads a file.

  5. Keep DocSend for the few documents that need page-by-page analytics or a data room.

Run both tools side by side on one live proposal first. Compare what you learn from each, and drop the one whose extra detail you never read.

Pick the one that matches your next send

If you need reading time per page, watermarks or a data room, use DocSend. Otherwise, compare the seven points above against each tool before you decide. For related reading, see the white-label alternative for digital agencies or how to share files with clients.
