How recipients open a password protected transfer

A password protected transfer opens on a page that asks for the password. Until the right password is entered, the files are not shown. This article explains what recipients do on that page, what each message means, and how long their browser remembers the password.

Add a password when you create a transfer

When you create a transfer, tick Password protected on the step where you choose how people can access it, then type the password in the box that says "Set a password". The steps for setting an expiry date and pausing a link are in How to password protect and set an expiry on a file transfer. Send the password through a different channel from the link.

What recipients see

  1. Open the transfer link. The page is titled Protected Transfer and says: "Please enter the password to access this transfer."

  2. Type the password in the Password field. The icon on the right of the field shows or hides what you type.

  3. Click Access files. The files appear on the page.

If the field is empty, the page asks for the password first. A wrong password shows Incorrect password. After 20 password checks within one hour from the same internet address, the page shows Too many attempts. Try again later. and the recipient has to wait before trying again.

After the right password, the browser keeps access to that transfer for 30 days, so the recipient does not need to type the password again on that browser.

Who opens it without the password

Workspace owners and team members open a password protected transfer without entering the password. Everyone else needs it, including client contacts.
