File requests in Tarkle: how to collect files from clients

A file request is a link you send to a client so they can upload files straight into your Tarkle workspace. It is the opposite of a transfer: a transfer sends files to someone, a file request collects files from someone. A request you create from the Requests page is public, so anyone who has the link can upload.

How to create a file request

  1. Open the Requests page. It is its own page in your workspace, with cards for Requests, Page views and Uploads above the list.

  2. Click New request in the toolbar, next to the search box. On an empty list, Create request opens the same window.

  3. Enter a Title. Keep it specific, for example "Project assets" or "Campaign materials".

  4. Add a Description that says exactly which files you need.

  5. Choose the Folder for uploaded files. Each request gets its own sub-folder, named after its title, inside the folder you pick.

  6. Set a Deadline if you want one. You can pick a date from one day to three years ahead, and click Clear to remove it.

  7. Check the notification box. Send email notifications when files are uploaded is ticked by default.

  8. Save the request with the button at the bottom of the window. A message says "Request created." and the request appears in the list.

If you choose no folder, uploads go to the File requests folder. On Free you can have one active request at a time. A request is active when it has no deadline or its deadline is still ahead. When you reach the limit, New request is greyed out. Pro and Agency allow unlimited active requests.

Get the link to send

The window does not show the link after you save. Open the three-dot menu at the end of the request row instead:

  • Copy URL copies the public link, on your own domain if you have a custom domain.

  • Send by email opens a window to email the link to someone.

  • Upload limit sets how much can be uploaded to this request.

  • Close request stops new uploads, and Open request turns them back on.

  • Edit reopens the window to change the title, description, folder, deadline or notifications.

  • Delete removes the request.

Note: Delete acts at once, without asking you to confirm.

What the client sees

The client opens the link and sees your title and description with an area that reads Drag and drop here or click to upload. They add their files and send them. If the files are over the request's upload limit, they see a message with the limit. A request that is closed or past its deadline does not open.

What happens next

Uploaded files land in the folder you chose, and you find them in your Files. If notifications are on, you get an email when someone uploads.
