How to collect feedback on a PDF or images with a canvas

A canvas is a review page for one or more PDFs or images. Reviewers open the link without an account, leave comments and a final decision, and your team tracks each comment from one place. Use it when a client needs to sign off on a design, a proof or a document.

In the app the page is called Feedback in the sidebar, and each item you create is called a canvas.

How to create a canvas

  1. Open Feedback. Choose Feedback in the sidebar to see your canvases.

  2. Start a new canvas. Open the new canvas dialog.

  3. Choose the kind. Pick PDF or Image.

  4. Add your files. Upload them with browse, pick them from the Library, or use Import for Dropbox and Google Drive.

  5. Add a password if you want one. Tick Password protect and type a password into Set a password.

  6. Add a deadline if you want one. Tick Feedback deadline and choose a date and time.

  7. Click Create canvas. Wait until each file shows as uploaded and ready.

  8. Share the link. On the canvas card, choose Share to open a box with the link, or use Copy link.

A PDF canvas accepts only PDF files. An image canvas accepts PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, BMP, SVG, HEIC and HEIF. The Website and Video kinds are shown as Coming soon and cannot be chosen yet.

What reviewers can do

A reviewer opens the link, enters the password if you set one, and can comment without signing in. They can:

  • leave a general comment, or click a spot on an image or PDF page to pin a comment there;

  • reply to comments;

  • tag a teammate, or anyone who has already commented on the canvas, with @. One comment can tag up to 10 people;

  • attach one file to a comment: a PNG, JPEG, WebP, GIF or SVG image, or a PDF. Pasting or dropping an image into the comment box attaches it;

  • finish with Approve this work or Request changes, add an optional note, and click Submit review.

Attachment size limits are 10 MB for PNG, JPEG, WebP and GIF images, 2 MB for SVG and 25 MB for PDF. Tarkle checks the real file type, and refuses an SVG that contains scripts.

What your team can do

Team members open a password-protected canvas directly, without entering the password.

  • Set a status. Each comment is Active, In Progress, In Review or Resolved. Choosing Resolved also marks the comment resolved. The author of the comment is emailed when its status changes.

  • Assign a comment to a member of your team.

  • Reply for the team only. A team-only reply is hidden from guests, and it cannot tag a guest: Tarkle shows "Team-only replies can't tag guests" and posts nothing. A reply under a team-only note is itself team-only.

  • Change canvas settings. Open Canvas settings on the public page to add or disable a password, add, edit or remove a deadline, and disable or enable comments. After the deadline passes, or while comments are disabled, the canvas stays visible but nobody can post.

  • Manage the canvas. On the card, More actions lets you Customize URL (this needs the Pro plan), Move to project or Remove from project, Archive canvas and Delete canvas. An archived canvas no longer opens for reviewers and no longer counts toward your limit. Deleting is permanent and removes all of its feedback.

Limits and good to know

  • A Free plan holds up to 5 active canvases. Pro, Agency and lifetime plans have no cap on active canvases.

  • Comments cannot be edited or deleted, by reviewers or by your team. Only the status, resolved state and assignee change.

  • If someone posts too fast, Tarkle shows "You're going a little fast. Wait a moment and try again." Comments are limited to 10 a minute and 120 an hour for one address on one canvas.

  • Note: your workspace owner is emailed about each new top-level comment and each review decision. A person who is tagged gets an email too. Replies on their own do not send an email.

What happens next

Comments appear on the canvas page as reviewers post them. When a reviewer submits a decision, it is added to the canvas activity.
