Upload a new version of a file, see its version history and restore an earlier version when you need it.

Add a corrected file as a new version of the file it replaces. The earlier copy stays in the file's version history, where you can go back to it. To learn how versions are kept, read File versioning: what it is and how it works. File versions are available on Pro, and on Agency, which includes everything in Pro. On Free, New version and Version history show an Upgrade badge in the file's menu.

How to upload a new version

  1. Open Files. Go to Files and find the file in its folder.

  2. Open the file's menu. Click File actions, the three dots, on the file's row.

  3. Click New version. Pick the corrected file from your computer. The new file must have the same extension as the file it replaces, so a .pdf can only replace a .pdf.

  4. Answer the transfer question, if it appears. If the file is in a file transfer, Tarkle asks Update the transfer too? Click Upload and update transfer to save the version. Recipients get the new version from then on. Click Cancel to stop, and nothing is uploaded.

If the file is not in a transfer, Tarkle uploads it as soon as you pick it. The question does not appear when Update transfers automatically is on, as described below.

A file with another extension is refused with the message "A new version must be a .pdf file. To change the file type, upload it separately, or replace the file in the transfer." Tarkle also refuses an empty file, and a file larger than your plan allows. Pro and Agency support files up to 200 GB.

How to see the version history

  1. Open the file's menu. Click File actions on the file's row in Files.

  2. Click Version history. A window titled Version history opens with the file name under it.

The version in use is listed first with the label Current. Each earlier version shows its number, its size, the date it was replaced and how long it is kept, such as Expires in 12 days. Earlier versions are kept for 90 days on Pro and Agency, counted from the day they are replaced. When a version expires, it is removed from the list.

On an earlier version you see Preview, Download, Restore and Delete. Preview appears only for file types that Tarkle can show in the browser. Restore and Delete need permission to edit files.

How to restore an earlier version

  1. Open Version history. Use File actions on the file's row, then click Version history.

  2. Find the version. Look for its number and the date it was replaced.

  3. Click Restore. Use the Restore button on that version's row.

  4. Confirm. In the window titled Restore version N?, click Restore.

Restoring does not delete anything. The restored version becomes the current version, saved as a new version, and the present current version is kept as an earlier version for 90 days on Pro and Agency. The copy counts toward your storage. If the file is in a transfer, the window says so, and recipients get the restored version from then on. When the restore finishes, Tarkle shows "Version N was restored as the new current version."

How to delete an earlier version

  1. Open Version history. Use File actions on the file's row, then click Version history.

  2. Click Delete. Use the Delete button on that version's row, then click Delete in the window.

The version moves to the bin and is marked Deleted version. You can restore it with Restore from bin until its expiry date, and it counts toward your storage until then. Delete for good removes the version and its stored file now. It cannot be undone.

Update transfers automatically

To skip the transfer question, turn on Update transfers automatically. Open Settings, then General, then File settings. The switch saves as soon as you change it, and changing it needs the settings permission. It is off by default. When it is on, a new version of a file in a transfer goes straight through, and the transfer link serves the new version without asking. On Free, the switch is locked and shows a Pro badge.

What happens next

Anyone who already downloaded the file keeps their copy, so tell them when a correction matters. Earlier versions are private to your workspace and are never shared through transfers.
