How to charge for an audio transfer

Charge for an audio transfer when you want listeners to pay before they download your tracks. Listeners hear a free preview first, and then the checkout opens. This page covers the setup, the audio settings and what listeners see.

Before you start

Paid transfers are a Pro feature, and Agency includes everything in Pro. Charging needs three things: your organization on Pro or Agency, the Enable paid transfers switch turned on, and Stripe connected to the workspace. On the Free plan you can still connect Stripe, but the switch is disabled. Compare the plans on the pricing page.

Set up paid transfers

  1. Connect Stripe. Open Integrations and connect Stripe for the workspace. Tarkle needs a publishable key, a secret key and a webhook signing secret saved before it can charge. Share files and get paid with Stripe explains how to connect Stripe.

  2. Turn on Enable paid transfers. Go to Settings, then General, then File settings, and switch on Enable paid transfers. The switch is set per workspace and is off by default.

Note: The Charge for download option appears in the transfer dialog only when the switch is on and Stripe is connected. If it does not appear, read Why can't I turn on paid transfers?.

Create the audio transfer

  1. Click Share in your workspace, then choose Audio at the top of the dialog. How to create an audio transfer covers the basic steps for an audio transfer.

  2. On the first step, drop audio files onto the upload area or browse for them, or select audio that is already in your Library. Audio files are accepted when the browser reports an audio file type. When the type is missing or generic, the file extension decides: mp3, wav, ogg, m4a, aac, flac, aif, aiff, opus and wma are accepted. Other file types are refused. Click Continue.

  3. On the second step, enter a Title, which is required, and a Summary of up to 150 characters. The title is the heading listeners see on the audio page. Click Continue.

  4. On the third step, which offers Allow download and Charge for download, tick Charge for download (via Stripe). The price fields appear below it.

  5. Fill in the price fields:

  • Price: the amount, such as 9.99.

  • Currency: choose the currency for the sale.

  • Free preview (seconds): how long listeners can play before the checkout opens.

  • Limit downloads: how many copies you sell. Leave it blank for no limit.

  1. Click Create transfer. The button stays disabled until you enter a price.

What listeners see

Listeners open the audio page and play the tracks. When playback reaches the Free preview (seconds) length, playback stops and the checkout opens. Choosing to download all tracks before paying also opens the checkout. What is an audio transfer page? explains the audio page.

The checkout shows a Stripe payment form. The listener enters their payment details and clicks Complete Payment. The form shows the line Payment is secure and encrypted by Stripe. After payment, the page reloads to the audio page, and downloads are allowed once the purchase is recorded.

After a sale

Turning on Enable paid transfers also adds Payments to your sidebar. The Payments page lists each paid transfer with its price, number of purchases, total earned and the latest buyers.
