How to create an audio transfer
Add audio files to a listening page, then choose listen only, free download or paid download for your listeners.
An audio transfer gives your listeners a page with a player for your audio files. You choose whether they can only listen, download the tracks for free, or pay before they download. This page shows how to create one and what listeners see.
Create an audio transfer
Open the transfer dialog and choose the audio transfer type. Tarkle creates file, video and audio transfers in the same dialog. What are transfers in Tarkle? explains the three types.
Add your audio files. Each file becomes a track in the player. Only audio files are accepted: mp3, wav, ogg, m4a, aac, flac, aif, aiff, opus and wma. Any other file is refused with the message "Only audio files can be added to an audio transfer."
Enter a title for the transfer. A summary and a cover image are optional.
Choose how listeners get the tracks. Tick Allow download to let anyone who opens the page download all tracks for free. Tick Charge for download to have listeners pay first. If you tick neither box, listeners can play the tracks but cannot download them.
If you tick Charge for download, set the price, the currency, the preview length and an optional sales limit. The section below explains each one.
Finish the transfer and share its link. Listeners open the transfer on its own audio page.
What listeners see
Each track appears in the player with its waveform, its name, its file type and its size. The main play button reads Play. The buttons beside it skip back or forward 15 seconds and cycle the speed through 0.75, 1, 1.25, 1.5 and 2 times normal speed. Listeners can also mute the sound and click the waveform to jump to another point in the track.
When downloads are allowed, the top right of the player shows a Download all button. On a free transfer it saves all tracks as one ZIP file. Each track also has a menu with a download option. A listen-only transfer shows no download button, and Tarkle refuses download requests for it.
Charge for download
Charging for downloads needs three things. First, the organization needs a Pro plan, because paid transfers are a Pro feature and Agency includes everything in Pro. Compare the plans on the pricing page. Second, connect Stripe to your workspace under Settings, then Integrations, on Integrations. Third, go to Settings, then General, then File settings, and turn on Enable paid transfers. The switch is off by default. If you see a message when you try to charge, Why can't I turn on paid transfers? explains each one.
Once charging is on, set the paid fields:
Price and currency. Tarkle accepts the currencies Stripe supports. When a listener pays, Tarkle creates a Stripe payment for that price and currency.
Preview length. This is the number of seconds of each track a listener can play before the payment prompt opens. The dialog starts at 30 seconds.
Sales limit. This is optional. Leave it empty for no limit. Tarkle counts completed purchases and refuses a download once the limit is reached.
A paid transfer cannot use a password, burn after read, an email check before download, view only or an expiry date. Tarkle refuses to create a paid transfer that has one of them, and the message names the setting.
On a paid transfer the play button reads Preview. Playback stops at the preview length and the payment prompt opens. The main button then reads Buy for the price and currency, or Buy now when there is no price to show. A listener who has paid can download the tracks.
What happens next
Share the transfer link with your listeners. On a free transfer they can play and download the tracks straight away. On a paid transfer they listen to the preview, pay on the page, and then download. What is an audio transfer page? describes the page in more detail.
