Direct download links in Tarkle
A direct download link starts the file download as soon as someone opens it, with no transfer page.
A direct download link starts the file download as soon as someone opens it. The recipient gets no transfer page in between. Use it when the people you send files to only need the download itself.
What the recipient gets
A standard link opens the transfer page, which lists the files in the transfer. A direct link skips that page and starts the download. What arrives depends on what the transfer holds:
One file downloads as that file, with its original name.
Several files download as one ZIP file named after the transfer, for example ABC123.zip. The files sit at the top level of the ZIP, with no folders.
Folders are not included. A transfer that holds only a folder has nothing to download.
Links to files hosted on other services are left out.
Create a direct link
Open Transfers.
Create a file transfer as described in How to create a file transfer.
Turn on Direct link before you create the transfer.
Copy the link from the transfer.
The copied link starts with your Workspace URL, or with your Custom domain when one is set up, and ends in /direct, for example https://your-workspace.tarkle.com/t/ABC123/direct. When the recipient opens it, the download starts.
Limits to know before you share
File types. Tarkle checks the files of a direct transfer when you create it. It refuses executable programs (such as .exe), installers (such as .msi and .dmg), scripts (such as .js and .php), system files (such as .dll), archives (such as .zip, .rar and .7z) and macro-enabled documents (such as .docm and .xlsm). The error asks you to turn off Direct link to send those files.
Password and email check. A direct link does not ask for the transfer's password or an email address, and it skips a client organization limit. Use it only for files that anyone with the link may download. For files that need a password, use the standard link. How to password protect and set an expiry on a file transfer explains how.
View only. On a transfer set to View only, the direct link returns an error and no file.
Paid transfers. A paid transfer always uses the standard link, so Direct link is not available for it.
Expiry and disabling. A direct link stops working when the transfer expires, or when the transfer is disabled.
Burn after read. On a transfer set to burn after read, the first download uses up the link. After that the link returns an error.
Views and downloads. A direct download is not recorded as a view, and it does not trigger the Slack notice for views. Standard links record views, as How to see if a recipient opened your transfer explains.
