How do reviewers leave feedback?

Open the board link, leave comments on a spot or on the whole file, reply, and finish with Finish review.

When someone shares a feedback board with you, you can pin comments on an image or a PDF page, comment on the whole file, reply to comments, and finish with an approval or a request for changes. You do not need a Tarkle account. To learn what a board is, read What is Feedback in Tarkle?.

Steps

  1. Open the link. If asked, enter the password or your email.

  2. If the window Let us know who you are opens, enter your name and email, then click Continue. Both fields are required, and the email must look valid. Your details are saved in that browser, so the window does not show again there.

  3. Click the spot on the image or the PDF page where your comment belongs. A pin appears there, and a box with Leave a comment... opens.

  4. Write your comment and click Post comment. You can also press Ctrl or Cmd + Enter.

  5. To comment on the whole file, write in the box under the comment list (Leave general feedback...) and click Comment.

  6. To reply, click a comment to open it, write in the Add a reply... box, and click Post reply.

  7. When you are done, click Finish review. Choose Approve this work or Request changes, add a note in Additional comments (optional) if you want, and click Submit review.

Finish review is for reviewers, so team members do not see it. It is removed when the board stops accepting comments, and a review you already gave stays as a label. If you closed the name and email window, clicking Finish review asks you to tell us who you are first. After you submit, the button shows Approved or Changes requested. The approve or request changes article covers the review itself.

Tag someone

Type @ in a comment box and pick a team member or a person who has already commented on the board. The person you tag gets an email that says you mentioned them on the board. In a reply marked Team only, you can tag teammates only.

Attach a file

Each comment can carry one file. Click the button labelled Attach a file in the comment box, or paste or drop an image or PDF into it. Images (PNG, JPEG, WebP and GIF) can be up to 10 MB, SVG files up to 2 MB, and PDF files up to 25 MB.

Use the keyboard

On an image, press Tab to focus it, then use the arrow keys to move the pin marker. Hold Shift for smaller steps. Press Enter or Space to place the pin, or Esc to remove the marker. On a PDF, each page has a Comment on page button. It appears when you reach it with the keyboard, and it places a pin in the centre of that page.

What you see

  • The comment list has a search box and filters, including Hide resolved.

  • Your own comments and replies show Sent or Seen.

  • New comments and replies appear without a reload.

  • Team members can mark a reply Team only. Reviewers never see those replies.

  • A board that has been disabled, or whose link has expired, cannot be opened.

A note below the comment box shows when feedback closes: Feedback closes in the days left, or Feedback closes today, each with the date. After the deadline, the comment box is replaced by Feedback closed on and the date. If the team turns comments off, the box shows Commenting disabled. Reviewers can still read the board. Deadlines and closing explains how a team sets a deadline.

Stop the emails

Most emails from a board end with a Stop these emails link, including the emails about new comments and replies, mentions and status changes. The email about a submitted review has no such link. Which emails a board sends explains who gets each one and how to stop them.

Limits

A comment can be up to 4,000 characters. A longer comment is refused with "That comment is too long." Shorten it and send again. If a comment is refused, what you typed stays in the box.

What happens next

Your comments appear on the board for the team and the other reviewers. Your review shows on the board as Approved or Changes requested.
