How to collect feedback on a PDF or images

Create a board from a PDF or images, share its link, and collect pinned comments and a review decision.

Use a board to send a PDF or a set of images to a client or a teammate as one link. Reviewers pin comments on the file and finish with an approval or a request for changes, and they do not need an account. In the app each one is called a board. You create and track boards on the Feedback page.

How to create a board

  1. Open Feedback. Open the Feedback page in the workspace the board belongs to.

  2. Click Create board. A dialog opens for your files.

  3. Check the file type. A PDF board accepts PDF files only. An image board accepts PNG, JPG, GIF, WebP, BMP, SVG, HEIC and HEIF files.

  4. Add your files to the dialog. Dropbox or Google Drive appear when your account has connected them.

  5. Wait for every file to upload. Each file uploads as soon as you add it. Create board stays disabled until every file is uploaded.

  6. Click Create board again. Once the board is created, you can share it.

  7. Share the link. Send the link to your reviewers. To find it again later, hover over the board's card on the Feedback page and click Share.

Before you click Create board, you can tick Add password and type the password into Set a password, tick Add deadline and choose a date and time, or tick Allow downloads, so viewers get a Download button. The deadlines article explains what a deadline does, and how to let viewers download a board explains the download button.

What reviewers can do

Reviewers open the link. The first time they comment or review, Tarkle asks for a name and an email under Let us know who you are. If you set a password, reviewers must enter it first.

Reviewers can:

  • click a spot on the file to pin a comment there;

  • reply to a comment;

  • tag people with @: a teammate, or anyone who has already commented on the board. One comment can tag up to 10 people;

  • attach one file to a comment: a PNG, JPEG, WebP or GIF image up to 10 MB, an SVG up to 2 MB, or a PDF up to 25 MB. Tarkle checks the real file type and refuses an SVG that could run script. Pasting or dropping a file into the comment box attaches it;

  • finish with a decision. In the review form titled Finish reviewing this board, they choose Approve this work or Request changes, add a note in Additional comments (optional) if they want, and click Submit review.

A signed-in team member cannot submit a review. The reviewer guide covers the steps in more detail.

What your team can do

Team members are never asked for a board's password, so they open a protected board directly.

  • Set a status. Each comment is Active, In Progress, In Review or Resolved. Choosing Resolved also marks the comment resolved, and the person who wrote the comment is emailed when the status changes. Assign a comment to a teammate, who is emailed too. See comment statuses and assignees.

  • Reply for the team only. A team-only reply is hidden from guests. It cannot tag a guest: Tarkle shows Team-only replies can't tag guests and posts nothing. A reply under a team-only comment is team-only too.

  • Change the board's settings. Open Board actions on the board page. It holds Add password or Disable password, Add deadline or Edit deadline, Allow downloads or Disable downloads, and Disable comments or Enable comments. Only the owner and members with the edit-files permission can change these. Team members also see Enable notifications or Disable notifications.

  • Manage the board from its card. On the Feedback page, hover over a board's card and click More actions. Then:

  • Customize URL is not on the Free plan. See plans and pricing for the plans that include it.

  • Archive board is available to any team member. An archived board leaves the list, shows under the Archived tab and no longer opens for reviewers. Restoring it counts toward your plan's active-board limit.

  • Delete board is for the owner and admins. The confirmation warns that the board and all of its feedback will be deleted, and you click Delete to confirm.

Emails from a board

When someone posts a comment or a reply, everyone who has taken part on the board is emailed: the workspace owner, guests who have commented and teammates who have commented. The person who wrote the comment and anyone tagged in it are not emailed about it. A tagged person gets a mention email instead. A team-only note goes to team members only. Each person gets at most one of these emails per board every 5 minutes, and comments that arrive in that time are sent later together in one digest email. A review decision always emails the workspace owner. See Which emails does Feedback send for each one.

Limits and good to know

  • On the Free plan, you can have up to 5 active boards in each workspace. Pro and Agency have no board limit. See plans and pricing or Feedback plans and limits.

  • Comments and replies cannot be edited. Only a comment's status, its resolved state and its assignee change. A comment can hold up to 4,000 characters.

  • Tarkle allows 10 comments a minute and 120 an hour from one address on one board. Past that, it shows "You're going a little fast. Wait a moment and try again."

  • When the deadline passes, or when someone chooses Disable comments, the board stays visible but nobody can post. Reviews are closed too.

What happens next

Comments appear on the board as reviewers post them. A submitted decision is added to the Activity list in the review form, and the workspace owner is emailed about it.
