How to share files with Tarkle: access options for a transfer

A file transfer is the link you send so someone can open your files. You create one in three steps, and the last step is where you choose who can open it. This page walks through those steps and explains each access choice.

Create a file transfer

  1. Open Transfers in the workspace that holds your files and start a new transfer.

  2. Choose your files. You can upload files or a folder, or pick items from your Library. Click Continue.

  3. Enter a Title. It is required. The Summary is optional and takes up to 150 characters. Click Continue.

  4. Choose who can open the transfer, as described below. Click Create transfer.

  5. Copy the link, or add recipient email addresses. Tarkle emails the transfer to each address, up to 30 at a time.

Choose who can open a transfer

The access choices are in the third step. Charge for download switches off some of the others, as noted below.

  • A password. The visitor types the password before the files open. Their browser remembers it for 30 days. If you change the password, every visitor has to enter the new one. A file or folder inside a transfer can also carry its own password. Read how recipients open a password protected transfer.

  • An email address. The visitor enters an email address before the files open. Their name is optional. The browser remembers the address for 24 hours, then asks again. See email gated file transfers.

  • Burn after read. The transfer works for one download. The first download is recorded, and later download attempts are refused. The download does not delete the files from your workspace. See burn after read.

  • View only. Recipients can preview the files in the browser, without a download button. See view only file sharing.

  • A direct link. Opening the link starts the download at once, with no transfer page in between. See direct download links. A transfer has one download mode, so the direct link and the email address check are separate choices.

  • An expiration date. It is optional. The earliest date is one day from now and the latest is three years from now. After the date passes, the link stops opening the files. See file transfer expiration dates.

  • Charge for download. Visitors pay through Stripe before they can download the files. See how to charge for access to a transfer.

Charge for download switches off the password, the email address check, burn after read, view only, the direct link and the expiration date. Payment is the gate, so the other choices do not apply to a paid transfer.

Charge for download

Charge for download needs a Pro or Agency plan. Agency includes everything in Pro. Your workspace also needs the Enable paid transfers switch, which you turn on in Settings, then General, then File settings. Stripe must be connected in Integrations. Free can connect Stripe, but the switch stays off until you are on Pro or Agency.

Plans and size

The largest transfer you can send depends on your plan. Send large files lists transfers of up to 200 GB with one link on Pro and Agency.

What happens next

Once the transfer is created, you can check whether someone opened it. Read How to see if a recipient opened your transfer.
